Why Ducks Forage for Garden Insects
Why grass, damp edges and planted areas are interesting to ducks, and how a garden visit gives them valuable enrichment.
Foraging is one of the things ducks naturally enjoy. A safe change of scene gives them time to explore, investigate and use their bills in a way that fits normal duck behaviour.
Exploring is part of being a duck
Ducks move through grass and around edges looking, tasting and dabbling. Small insects and invertebrates can be part of that natural searching, alongside nibbles of soft grass and weeds.
Fresh space can be good enrichment
A suitable secure garden gives the ducks new smells, textures and places to investigate. Their welfare still comes first, so visits are planned around weather, travel and the individual flock.
Natural does not mean consequence-free
Ducks can leave droppings, make muddy areas near water, paddle in ponds and show an interest in plants. Clear boundaries and honest expectations make the visit better for both garden and ducks.
